How it works

Provide entry, stop distance or stop price, and position size. The calculator outputs risk per trade in dollars and percent.

Formula

Risk ($) = Position Size × (Entry − Stop) for longs. Risk % = Risk ÷ Account Balance × 100.

Example

If you enter at $1,200 with a stop at $1,140 and a $5,000 position, risk = $5,000 × (1,200−1,140)/1,200 ≈ $250.

Tips

  • Set risk per trade (e.g., 1%) before choosing position size.
  • Place stops where the setup is invalidated, not just at round numbers.
  • Recheck stops after big volatility shifts.

FAQ

What percent should I risk?

Commonly 0.5–2% per trade depending on experience and volatility.

Do I move my stop?

Trail stops only if the setup improves and you lock profit; avoid widening stops.

Can I use this for futures?

Yes. Ensure size and leverage align with your risk cap and liquidation buffer.

Should stops be visible?

On some venues, hidden or alert-based exits can reduce stop hunts; weigh execution certainty.
