What This Calculator Does
A break‑even calculator tells you the exit price needed to cover your entry cost plus trading fees so the trade neither gains nor loses. By entering entry price, position size, and fee percentage, it outputs the minimum price where your net profit becomes zero. This is vital for setting targets that actually overcome fees and for understanding how much room a trade has before slipping into loss after costs.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator assumes fees apply on both entry and exit. It multiplies the entry price by (1 + fee% × 2) to find the price where total fees equal the price increase. If you buy at $20,000 with a 0.1% fee, the break‑even exit is roughly $20,040. On larger positions or higher fees, the required lift is bigger. Knowing this threshold prevents setting take‑profits too close to entry where fees would erase the gain.
Example Calculation
Suppose you enter 0.5 BTC at $30,000 with a 0.08% fee. The calculator returns a break‑even exit near $30,048. If you set a target at $30,050, almost all of that move would be consumed by fees, leaving negligible profit. Moving the target to $30,300 creates enough distance for both fees and meaningful upside. This makes it obvious when a planned scalp is too tight to be worthwhile.
Trading Tips
Check break‑even before placing tight targets, especially on high‑fee venues or when using market orders. Lower fees or maker orders shrink the required move. Wider stops with no plan to cover fees can lock in losses—pair break‑even awareness with risk‑reward planning. If your strategy often aims for moves smaller than the fee drag, adjust timeframes, size, or venue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does fee percent matter?
Fees on both entry and exit raise the break-even price above your entry.
Does size change break-even?
No, fee percent drives break-even per unit; size changes total fees paid.
Should I include slippage?
Yes, add a small buffer if you expect slippage on the exit.
